Routes
Tracing Forgotten Footsteps in Baixue Village – A Vanishing Camphor Hamlet
Tucked away in the mountains of Alishan Township, Baixue Village—also known as Shuishan Village—once stood as a vibrant community during Taiwan’s camphor-boiling era.
Located on a remote plateau along the western bank of the Boboyou Stream, upstream of the Nanzixian River, this tiny settlement thrived under Japanese rule. Villagers extracted camphor from trees and carried the precious resin down to Niitaka-kuchi (today’s Tataka), where it was transported via railway or along the old camphor trade route to Kaohsiung.
At its peak, over a hundred people called this mountain village home.
But as Taiwan’s camphor industry faded and the area remained isolated without proper roads, families slowly moved away. Baixue Village eventually vanished—not just from maps, but from memory.
Today, what remains are forest-covered ruins and a haunting sense of time standing still. Hiking here means walking through the echoes of a forgotten life, piecing together stories from moss-covered stone walls, camphor tree roots, and abandoned trails.
If you’re the kind of traveler who seeks not just scenery, but stories — Baixue will move you.
