Routes

Recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, Mount Fuji is more than just Japan’s highest peak at 3,776 meters — it’s a mountain steeped in spiritual meaning and cultural identity.
Formed roughly 100,000 years ago through repeated volcanic eruptions, Mount Fuji has long been revered, feared, and celebrated by the Japanese people. Since the Heian period (9th century), many shrines were built at its base as people sought to appease the volcanic forces they could not control.
Over the centuries, Fuji has become deeply rooted in Japan’s mountain worship traditions, appearing in ancient texts, classical poetry, and iconic artworks. Today, it remains not only a breathtaking natural landmark but also a powerful national symbol — of beauty, resilience, and spiritual harmony.
